Stefano Riva-Sanseverino was born in Rome (Italy) on January 24-th, 1941. He graduated in Electronic Engineering at the University of Palermo, Italy, in 1965. He started his research activities in the field of Applied Electronics with the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering of University of Palermo, where since 1980 he is Full Professor of Electronic Devices, and Head of the same Dept., from 1996 to 1998. Also he was Head of the Electronic Engineering Academic Council from 2002 to 2007. During the two-year period 1973/75 he was a visiting scientist with Bell Telephone Laboratories, Holmdel, N.J.(USA), working in the field of Integrated Optics

His research activities are documented by more than 120 papers in the fields of electronics, laser applications, optoelectronics, information technologies and, more recently, nonlinear integrated optics. Since 1975 he has been in charge of the coordination of national research projects (ASI, CNR, MURST/MIUR, ...) and member of Scientific Committees in several research institutions (CSELT - until 1998 -, ELASIS - until 2001-, etc.). In 2001 he received the "G. Marconi" award from AEI (Associazione Elettrotecnica ed Elettronica Italiana). From 2003 he is a member of IEEE/LEOS. Since 1980, he has been President of the Centre for Electronics Research in Sicily (CRES). Recently he has been appointed as President of the National Electronics Group for the period 2008-2011.
